The Mid-Range Trip: A Balanced Week in Batumi

← Back to all posts

There is a sweet spot in travel. It is the place where you are not counting every single lari, but you are also not paying 3,000 NOK a night for a hotel room.

For many Norwegian travelers, this is the ideal way to experience Batumi. You want a reliable flight that doesn't leave you exhausted, a hotel with a proper reception and a good bed, and the freedom to order a nice bottle of Georgian wine with dinner without flinching.

This is the blueprint for the balanced mid-range trip. It costs more than our budget guide, but it delivers a significantly more comfortable experience.

Step 1: The Flights (Skip the 2 AM Layovers)

The biggest upgrade you can make on a mid-range trip is how you get there. Instead of the cheapest Wizz Air route (which often involves long layovers or arriving in Kutaisi in the middle of the night), you have two excellent mid-range options.

The Turkish Airlines Route (via Istanbul)

Turkish Airlines flies from Oslo (OSL) to Batumi (BUS) via Istanbul. Total travel time is around 9 hours. It is the fastest and most comfortable way to get to the city, and because you land directly in Batumi, you skip the 2-hour bus ride from Kutaisi. Round-trip tickets typically land between 6,000 and 7,500 NOK.

The Pegasus Airlines Route (via Istanbul)

Pegasus is the budget-friendly alternative that still offers a proper connection. It flies from Oslo to Batumi via Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). A major advantage here is that 20 kg of checked luggage is usually included, which you don't get on Wizz Air. Round-trip fares are often around 4,000–5,500 NOK.

💡 The Smart Mid-Range Flight Hack

You can mix airlines to get the best of both worlds. Fly Wizz Air outbound (cheap and fast) and return with Pegasus. Pegasus includes checked baggage, so you can buy your Georgian wine and souvenirs on the way home without paying extra luggage fees. We've seen this combination cost around 2,000 NOK.

Step 2: The Accommodation (Reliable 4-Star Comfort)

If you want to avoid the variable quality of private apartments (like Orbi) but don't want to pay Sheraton prices, Batumi has some excellent mid-range hotels.

Hampton by Hilton Batumi Center

This is a newer, modern hotel located right in the city center, just a 5-minute walk from Europe Square. It is consistently praised for being clean, quiet, and reliable. You get a proper breakfast and a comfortable bed. Expect to pay around 400–600 NOK per night.

Best Western Plus Batumi

A solid choice near the beach and boulevard. It offers a welcoming staff, good amenities, and a reliable standard of comfort. It is not flashy, but it is a safe and comfortable base for exploring the city.

📍 What to Expect in a Mid-Range Hotel
  • The Good: Reliable Wi-Fi, a proper breakfast buffet, air conditioning that works, and a 24-hour reception.
  • The Trade-off: You often don't get the sweeping sea views of the Orbi towers or the luxury facilities of the Sheraton.
  • Best For: Couples, older travelers, or anyone who values a good night's sleep and a reliable standard over a cheap price.

Step 3: Eating Out (Beyond the Bakeries)

The mid-range trip is where you get to explore Batumi's dining scene. You can afford to sit down at a nice restaurant, order a variety of dishes, and enjoy a bottle of Saperavi.

Lunch at the Fish Market

This is still one of the best meals in the city. Even on a mid-range budget, the experience of picking your fish at the market and having it grilled for you remains fantastic value. You can enjoy a feast for two with wine for around 60–80 lari (250–350 NOK).

Dinner at a Proper Restaurant

For dinner, look for a restaurant that specializes in traditional Georgian dishes and has a good wine list. You can expect to pay around 80–120 lari (350–500 NOK) for a generous dinner for two with wine. You won't go hungry in Batumi.

The One Italian Exception

If you want a break from Georgian food, head to Aromi Italiani on European Square. They serve excellent wood-fired pizza and have a great wine selection. It is a great place to relax and people-watch.

Step 4: What to Do (A Mix of Free and Paid)

Batumi's promenade and beaches are free, but with a mid-range budget, you can afford to explore a bit further.

The Bottom Line: What Does the Mid-Range Trip Cost?

Let's add it up. Here is a realistic estimate for a 7-night mid-range trip for two people (per person cost):

Total: ~8,500 – 9,000 NOK per person.

This budget gives you a very comfortable holiday. You fly a reliable airline, stay in a clean and modern hotel, and enjoy excellent food and wine. It is a balanced, stress-free way to experience Batumi.
